| Abstract Title | Tell Me Your Story: A Qualitative Exploration of Patient-Generated Narratives in the Electronic Health Record to Support Whole-Person Care |
| Will the presenter be a: | Graduate Student |
| Methods | Using a qualitative descriptive design, three family medicine residents and faculty members, and seven patients participated in semi-structured interviews to date. Data were analyzed via reflexive thematic analysis, with iterative coding and comparison across groups to identify recurring patterns and construct broader themes. |
| Results | Preliminary findings revealed divergent views on incorporating narrative PGHD into the EHR. Patients largely welcomed the opportunity to share their stories and values, viewing it as enhancing ownership and ensuring their perspectives were formally documented. However, they raised concerns about privacy, information overload, and whether physicians would meaningfully engage with these narratives. Family physicians questioned the added value of such narratives, perceiving this information as already being known and embedded in the patient-physician relationship, while raising concerns about the workload of keeping them updated and the risk of them being lost in the EHR. |
| Discussion | Considering the conflicting views on the value of narrative PGHD, there is a need to reconcile patient interest in documenting these with physician concerns about feasibility and usability. Future efforts should focus on developing approaches that preserve patient voice while ensuring the information is accessible and usable by physicians. |
