| Title | Strive: Shifting From Surviving to Thriving and Leading with Purpose. |
| Rationale/Background | The clinical environment presents a variety of stressful situations, leading to increased rates of burnout, depression and suicidal ideation among medical students, residents and physicians. Therefore, it is essential for us to develop strategies for recognizing and mitigating burnout. Additionally, we need to develop effective stress management tactics and practice them regularly, to ensure we perform, lead and collaborate effectively under stress. The STRIVE Workshop provides a tool kit of skills to navigate stressful situations and then consolidates learning through practical simulations (high fidelity, simulation trainers, actor lead and role playing scenarios) coupled with acute response debriefing. These skills ensure learners and clinicians develop confidence when performing in stressful events and promotes effective leadership and team work skills. This creates an environment that fosters not only surviving but thriving while leading with purpose and focus. Learn how to manage stress, apply skills to develop confidence as a clinician, leader and team member and shift performance from surviving to thriving while leading with purpose. |
| Instructional Methods | The STRIVE workshop is facilitated by learner and physician trainers that create a supportive and non judgment learning environment to expose participants to stress scenarios through a simulated experience. Multiple videos have been created to facilitate training during the pandemic and can be easily integrated into training programs. Scenarios include delivering bad news, EDI (racism and sexism), patient-staff conflict, staff-staff conflict, medical errors, leading a code, patient death, etc. Partipants learn resiliency skills, practice applying them throughout the simulation and debrief. |
| Target Audience | This workshop is intended for learners to physicians of all specialties and all allied health care professionals. Training has been provided to medical students, residents in Anesthesiology, Dermatology, Family Medicine (Rural and Urban), Internal Medicine and Radiology and to clinicians in Sundre and Halton. |
