Title | Understanding the Development of A Physician Practice Reflection Tool - A Case Study |
Background/Purpose | Integrating Physician Practice Improvement (PPI) into CPD support is a new challenge. A group of educators explored such CPD practice through building an online physician practice reflection tool. We conducted a case study on this CPD initiative to uncover how we could translate PPI principles into CPD programming and foster physician learning in practice assessment and quality improvement. |
Methods | Starting in late 2020, we developed the tool 'My Practice Improvement' (MyPI). In the context of this project, the instrumental case study aligned with Stake's approach of relativist and interpretivist orientation. The investigation conducted field observations and document review throughout the project for a one-year period, followed by interviews with project team members. We used Practice Theory as a basis to analyze and represent activities in which the educators engaged. |
Results | MyPI was successful in using continuing quality improvement principles to provide a structured approach for practice reflection. The core value of MyPI is guiding meaningful practice change for physicians themselves. The process of developing MyPI was a collaborative effort between human-centered design and education development and was well situated in interdependent connection between team members, technical environment, and greater context beyond. |
Discussion | In this case study we co-constructed understanding on how to approach PPI in CPD practice. The study revealed the complexity of such education initiatives, offering insights in the connections and design patterns for CPD educators' future exploration. |
