Title | Learning to Lead: Implementation of A Transition to Senior Resident Workshop |
Background/Purpose | The transition from junior to senior resident roles can be challenging with increased responsibility and expectations. Specialty-specific medical expert expertise is expected of senior residents, as are other competencies including collaborator, leader, teacher/scholar and communicator. Leadership education for residents in these areas as they transition to senior residents roles is variable across programs and often focused on clinical skills and medical expert competencies. We aim to describe resident preparedness for undertaking senior resident responsibilities, as it relates to leadership, collaboration, communication and teacher-scholar roles. |
Methods | A synchronous leadership workshop was developed for PGY1s from several large PGME programs. Workshop topics include psychological safety, teaching across the continuum, feedback and collaboration across programs. Workshop participants completed pre and post-workshop questionnaires about their preparedness for assuming senior resident roles. Participants will be invited to a focus group 3-6 months after the workshop to reflect on their experiences as senior residents and any potential impact of the workshop. |
Results | This workshop brings residents from different programs together, early in their training to explore leadership topics. This format provides an opportunity for residents to learn from and with each other. Future focus groups will provide longitudinal qualitative data about the experiences of residents as they move into senior leadership roles and are tasked with leading clinical teams. |
Discussion | Focused leadership education for residents as they transition to senior resident roles can provide an opportunity to reinforce key topics, build community across programs and ensure residents are appropriately prepared for their roles in contributing to a safe clinical learning environment. |
