Title | Quality Improvement Experiential Student Training (QuEST) Program: Evaluating the Effectiveness of a Novel Medical Student-Led Quality Improvement Education Program |
Background/Purpose | No formal opportunities exist for undergraduate medical students at the University of Toronto (UofT) to gain hands-on experience in quality improvement and patient safety (QIPS). We developed the QuEST Program, offering enhanced theoretical and project-based opportunities in QIPS longitudinally. A pilot study of QuEST during the 2021-2022 academic year revealed that implementation of an experiential-focused QIPS education program is feasible. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the QuEST Program in equipping students with foundational QIPS knowledge, understanding, and application evaluated through validated knowledge assessment and scholarship. Specifically, we aim to increase student QIPS knowledge (measured via Quality Improvement Knowledge Assessment Test-Revised; QIKAT-R) during the 2022-2023 academic year by 20% or more and achieve a scholarly production rate of at least 88% by June 2023. |
Methods | This program evaluation study will follow a pre-and post-intervention design. Consistent with the Kirkpatrick Model for Evaluation in Training, we will evaluate the impact of QuEST on student participant satisfaction and changes to student attitudes (assessed using mixed methods questionnaires), and changes to student QIPS knowledge and skills, assessed using the QIKAT-R. Further, students and faculty supervisors will report scholarship progress (a proxy of project completion and quality) and complete feedback surveys to inform areas for improvement. Results will be analyzed descriptively and narratively synthesized. |
Results | Data collection is ongoing, and findings will be available at the time of presentation. |
Discussion | Through the evaluation of the QuEST Program, we aim to build and sustain a robust experiential-focused QIPS curriculum. |
