Title | Edi Includes Accessibility (Edia): Supporting Pgme Trainees with Disabilities |
Rationale/Background | Self-identification and requests for academic/workplace accommodation by PGME trainees with disabilities are rising. Still, trainees with disabilities describe feeling "invisible" and struggling to find a sense of safety and belonging within medical education and medicine. They face barriers including "hidden curricula" and stigma when disclosing disability and navigating accommodations. Many accommodation processes lack clarity, transparency and confidentiality. Meeting the needs of medical trainees with disabilities requires meaningful engagement with them and other educational and health professionals, teamwork and smooth communication, and adoption of clear, actionable policies, processes, and strategies by programs and leaders, with an understanding of the clinical, educational, and regulatory contexts. Wellness and equity and inclusion efforts must address accessibility and disability issues. In this workshop we will highlight multiple perspectives and strategies as we consider accommodations and accessibility initiatives in PGME, with examples from recent experiences, and process/policy changes within our institution. |
Instructional Methods | This interactive session, highlighting multiple perspectives including lived experience, will have participants engage in discussion and problem-solving using cases to illustrate common accommodation and accessibility issues. |
