Title | A North American First in Ottawa: A Director of Planetary Health and Why Every Faculty of Medicine Should Consider Creating This Position Now. |
Abstract | Faculties of Medicine need to take action on the greatest threat to the health of humanity-climate change. While many competing interests demand attention, this is an existential threat. Recognizing the ethics of academic medicine and planetary health are fully aligned, we must consider generations whose future is being jeopardized including current and future learners. The ecological determinants of health are critically important to people we care for now and in the future, and deserve strategic planning with concrete actions . A Director of Planetary Health position was created as part of our strategic plan. Sharing the vision, mission, initiatives, as well as pragmatic considerations with the aim of effective implementation and partnerships with other faculties is our aim. The climate crisis is unfolding faster than anticipated-all Faculties need to engage immediately with mitigation and adaptation. A simple action demonstrating commitment to faculty members, learners, researchers, policy makers, the public, and government, is to create a Director of Planetary Health prior to the next conference. Such an action is aligned with the strategic plans of both AFMC and COFM in terms of social accountability and sustainability. We believe a healthier tomorrow and better future depend on actions such as this. |
