Title | Challenges Encountered by Faculty Members in Health Sciences Programs During Assessment's Validation Process |
Background/Purpose | Erroneous conclusions about learners' performance can be made when assessment data lacks evidence of validity. For example, health professionals can be deemed competent when they are not. Although faculty members in health sciences programs recognize the importance of assessment validity, they encounter challenges when investigating and documenting it. Moreover, it is unclear what are the barriers and potential facilitators to the operationalization and implementation of a validation process by faculty members. Therefore, we aimed to explore the barriers and facilitators experienced by faculty members during the validation process. |
Methods | We used qualitative interpretive description. Using quota sampling, we conducted individual interviews with faculty from four health sciences programs (medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy). Two team members carried out the thematic analysis according to Braun and Clarke's approach. All team members discussed the interpretation. |
Results | Twenty faculty members from four Quebec universities participated in the study. Participants shared facilitators and barriers that correspond to three levels of decision-making during validation process: 1- the organization and program (e.g., programmatic assessment, resources available); 2- the colleagues (e.g., collaboration and teamwork during validation and correction) and 3- the individual (e.g., motivation and involvement, relationship with learners). |
Discussion | Our findings suggest that changing faculty members' validation practice will require a multi-level intervention approach as they do perceive some facilitators and barriers as outside their own reach and control. Moving forward, the involvement of stakeholders from all levels will be important to favor and implement change. |
