At the community level, factors such as laws, norms, and policies set the background and climate for either healthy, respectful behavior among residents or unhealthy, harmful, intolerant behavior. Engaging youth in the sociopolitical process can result in not only improved laws and more equitable institutions to protect the community, but importantly, offer young people the skills and opportunities to navigate the sociopolitical arena. This session will discuss social justice and youth development concepts and consider local policy change opportunities to reduce risks and increase protective factors. Prevention leaders will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to connect with teens effectively and guide them toward becoming change agents. Through a combination of icebreakers, engagement strategies, and a case study of how youth successfully championed and advanced a local policy campaign, attendees will develop valuable skills for engaging youth as agents of change in prevention policy.

Workshop Type

Prevention

Workshop Length

3 Hour

 "}
