Alcohol beverage sales in the US increased by 55% immediately after the stay-at-home policies implemented in 2020. This increase was greatest among female caregivers, especially Black and non-Hispanic white women. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 1 in 10 women in the U.S. report roughly a 40% increase in alcohol-related problems. Overall, excessive alcohol consumption serves as a maladaptive coping behavior especially among female caregivers with multiple vulnerabilities (e.g., trauma-survivors, history of experiencing racism, etc.). To date, little research has examined women's lived experience with the COVID-19 pandemic and related coping behaviors, including excessive alcohol use. The purpose of this workshop will be to explore the impact of COVID-19 as a collective trauma on alcohol use among women in the United States. Results of an original phenomenological study to document women's lived experiences with the pandemic and the ways in which working mothers coped with caregiver stress during the quarantine phase will be discussed in the context of larger trends in excessive alcohol use among women as well as implications for prevention and treatment.

Workshop Type

Prevention
Treatment

Workshop Length

3 Hour

 "}
