The Role of Creative Arts in Medical Education: Perspectives from Contributors of the Journal of Art and Healing
Length of Presentation
Background/Purpose
While still an emerging field, there has been an increasing inclusion of the arts and humanities in medical curricula. The arts and humanities have been suggested to provide valuable contributions to the personal and professional development of medical students in various domains, including self-reflection, self-expression, and observational and critical thinking skills. There have been a variety of ways in which art has been introduced into medical education, such as through formal courses in narrative medicine, museum visits, and art-making workshops. Similarly, student-led initiatives that encourage engagement in creative endeavors, such as a creative arts publications, have also been suggested to provide benefits such as building appreciation for others' viewpoints and values, as well as providing a productive outlet for stress.
Summary of the Innovation
Murmurs: The Journal of Art and Healing is a literary and visual arts magazine organized by medical students at the University of Ottawa. The publication accepts contributions from medical trainees across Canada, aiming to showcase creative talent as well as provide a space to reflect on and share experiences in medicine. Murmurs releases annual issues focused on a key theme to inspire submissions, such as Celebrations, Journey, and Reflection.
Conclusion
Testimonials gathered from the contributing artists and writers of the sixth and seventh edition of Murmurs suggest that involvement in the arts during medical school can encourage self-reflection and allow for the development of empathic abilities. This adds to the growing body of evidence supporting the positive effects of the creative arts on medical student growth and well-being.
