Background One Health is a topic of growing concern and attention in current research. Understanding One Health is imperative as population health needs change with our climate crisis. While research in many One Health dimensions has gained traction, there is an evident gap in educational research considering the learning approaches that most engage students in One Health conceptualization and application. In our research, we explore students' capacity to learn and utilize One Health principles in a cross-cultural landscape through global experiential learning with partner organizations in Tanzania.
Learning objectives This session, we would hope to engage discussions on global experiential learning and unearthing the potential of global learning opportunities to foster youth excellence in global health. Further, our research would emphasize experiences that can provenly empower students to apply sociological and ecological determinants of health, and One Health concept learning.
Expected topics As such, the topics we expect to cover in a symposia include educational research, global health learning, planetary health, and One Health. Broadly, discussion points in these topics would include our expertise in crafting and embarking upon a global educational trip through which we learned from health practitioners and researchers of Tanzania. Secondly, we would emphasize findings of our educational research on One Health learning applications abroad. For example, the global and planetary health observations our study cohort identified through which they took on a One Health perspective, as students of primarily health sciences paradigms. One example of this would be considering non-human animal and humans intersectional health needs in public health rabies vaccination programs in agricultural lands in Tanzania.
Main messages Our discussions aim to leave experts and students alike with a consideration for the place of planetary health and One Health conversations in all global healthcare learning tasks. As students ourselves, we hope to instill a drive for experiential learning frameworks that promote active application of One Health. We strive for attendees to consider a paradigmatic shift towards a One Health perspective in all global health learning. Advancing global health must consider all dimensions of determinants of health which includes the intersectionality of wildlife and ecosystems in our diverse, global communities.
